The Days of and

I started working with Walter Cahners in 1972 with his company called Cahners Books on Sleeper Street in Boston (later they moved to Franklin Street)

When I moved to 221 Columbus Ave from Franklin St, I was still with the book division. We were on the mezzanine along with Paul Vinci, his secretary and the credit department.

They sold the book division to Wadsworth and we had to go with Wadsworth to Sleeper St. I quit after a year - I was very unhappy. I wasn't allowed to go back to Cahners for another year.

I called Paul for a reference so I could go get another job. He said, You're coming to work for me again." I reminded him of the remaining year in the sale and purchase agreement. He said to let him worry about that. I was back at Cahners a week later.

I asked Paul how he managed it. He said, "All I'm going to tell you is don't ever let anyone call you cheap. You're not." I never did find out what the price on my head was!

This is the old Ayer Mill in Lawrence, Mass.

In 1968, I went to work for a company called Technical Impex.They rented 3 floors in the Ayer Mill. Each floor was 96,000 square feet. It was a computerized book distribbution company (IBM punch cards). I worked there for 5 years. I left to go to work for one of the publishing companies that used them as their distributor. That publishing company was Cahners.
