Our Anne

This page dedicated to the memories from friends of Anne through the Cahners years and also has a couple of thank you's from Anne herself

(Anne speaking)

This was taken on our drive through the mountain on our way to Bolinas. I remember I did the driving. That's why I'm wearing my glasses in the picture. Remember how narrow and winding that road was? When we got there and when we got back, I had to peel my fingers off the steering wheel...lol. What a throw back to the 60's that place was - a haven for retired flower children.

When JR Murphy asked me to write a story about Anne Benedetto, I thought to myself how can I possibly write a story about Anne, the greatest story teller of all time! And wow, did she have some good ones about our colleagues at Cahners which, of course, I could never repeat in print!

I could tell stories like our whorl-wind trip through Switzerland as the guests of Swiss Air, (a freebee because of my position as the Director of Events), or celebrating my 50th Birthday in San Francisco during a Wescon with a trip through Marin County with Anne driving, white knuckled along the roads perched against the side of cliffs, or Anne being taken to the office on rainy days by Norman Cahner’s driver when she lived in Boston, lunches at Jason’s in the Back Bay that ended at dinner….so many wild and crazy times. But those stories wouldn’t capture the real essence of Anne.

Anne had the uncanny ability to recognize when anyone was in trouble, either personally or professionally. She’d zero in on you, whether you were sitting behind a mahogany desk in a professionally decorated office or in a cubicle in the back row against a wall. In her eyes, we were all equal. Without hesitation she would tell us exactly what we could or couldn’t do and when and how to do it. Without fail her advice and direction were absolutely correct and I finally figured out why…her moral compass was unimpeachable. The year that Anne was a recipient of the Climate of Excellence Award, I had the responsibility of organizing the awards event at the Ritz Carlton in Boston. There were a few very deserving recipients over the years at Cahners, yet Anne was singularly the most representative of the excellence created and fostered by Norman Cahners and Saul Goldweitz, our founding fathers. For Anne, failure was not an option and she made sure that none us failed. I can still picture her, usually a pen grasped in her hand, either in the elevator or marching down a corridor in the building with that look on her face and saying to myself, oh boy, someone is in trouble! The wrath of Anne – no one was immune! If you screwed up, she’d be right there telling you how and why and then set to work to get it fixed. And she did this because she loved us.

I can never look at a bag of M&Ms, a Diet Coke or a package of Parliaments without thinking of her. Yes, that was Anne’s normal diet. When Kathy Leonard and I visited her just a couple of weeks before she passed away, she was still smoking! By then she was on oxygen, but she turned it off and lit up the cigarette! I asked her why?!! She claimed that her type of cancer was definitely not caused by smoking. Who knows? Cancer sucks.

Patty, my package arrived today! I was absolutely blown away! It was so thoughtful and generous of you to send me this great t-shirt. I also want to thank you for the very nice note. I will most certainly wear it with pride. It will always be a reminder of what a great time we had on FB during the playoffs and the World Series. It was so much fun! If we make it to the playoffs next year, I will be wearing my authentic championship t-shirt along with the good luck "shirt." Thanks again - what a fabulous surprise!! Love, Dick

John

Below is a note written by Anne regarding Dick and the Masonic Lodge and what John Cole did for them.

My very own "Johnny Angel." My old friend John Cole just did me the most immense favor - I still can't believe it. The Masons here in Florida do not usually do Masonic services for Masons from out of state. You must be a member of a Florida lodge to receive this consideration. John, a Mason like Dick, got on the phone and spoke to several Masons in Massachusetts, including the Grand Secretary.

It took some doing but my husband, who so loved the Masons, will be getting a Masonic service on Monday at his memorial. I can never express how grateful I am to John for doing this. This would make Dick so very happy. I'm just over the moon that this is really going to happen. I owe you big for this, John.

You are the MAN!

Anne Gillis Benedetto -

I just wanted to Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sign from heaven to me! I was fearing the worse arriving into TF Green Airport Sunday night after being in Florida for over two weeks on vacation. All I could think of was my truck is going to be under a foot of snow and I did not put a scraper in my truck..pulling into the parking lot on the shuttle I could see all the cars covered in a foot of snow that have been parked in the lot. As we turned to section M4 - I could not believe my eyes - I had NO SNOW on my truck. The cars to the left and right were snow covered but I had nothing...and my truck started up on the first try! Deep down I know this was your doing...always watching out! Thank you Anne Gillis Benedetto!!! Keep watching over us and sending your signs.....PS - I know it was you because you did leave me the ice on the windshield to welcome me back!!! Love You Always!!
